OPENING DAY!

So here we are facing another beginning to opening season of camping. Funny, I feel like a kid counting down the days till
Christmas.  I love camping. I guess because it is my escape from the real world even if it is for just a little while. I love to watch everything start to bloom, it’s like a new beginning each year. I know some of you have had some hardships over the winter months and our thoughts and prayers go out to each and everyone of you.

We are planning a lot of new things for this year, so be on the look out, and if anyone would like to add some ideas, please join us at our board meetings and politely share your ideas with us. There are a few things I would like to address:  it’s the
beginning of the new season, so we all know the drill; rake our leaves, get our lots in shape for the spring and the summer holidays. It sure does make OUR park look more attractive and more enjoyable for everyone.

Remember, your board members are here to enjoy the park and everything that it has to offer just as you are.  Please, we are not the park police. If there is a fight in the park, please call the Lagrange County Sheriff’s department.  Their number is 1-260-463-7491.  Most people have a cell phone today so I would greatly recommend entering it into your contacts.

Thanks so much and I hope to see you around this year. I miss everyone and look forward to all the great times ahead.  Let’s make this a great year.

Tracy Miller, President Grand View Bend

Opening Day – Saturday, April 9, 2011  9:00 a.m.

We need two teams to turn on the water – 2-3 people per team.   If we have enough volunteers, there are many other things that need to happen on opening weekend as well including:

  • Cleaning of all common areas such as raking leaves and picking up debris: bath house areas, playgrounds, pavilion area including horse shoe pit area, tennis courts, pond area, miniature golf, entrance etc.
  • Opening the bath houses
  • Filling in pot holes in the roads
  • Putting picnic tables back on the reciprocal camping areas
  • Fix any water leaks
  • Once these items are completed, please see Jim for other opening day suggestions.

Thank you – Jim Davenport, Chair, Maintenance Committee

To all of the members of GVB:

I have decided to give up the newsletter for GVB.  I have written the newsletter since 1997 give or take a few months, here and there, and it is time for some new blood and new ideas.  Thanks to all the wonderful editors that have worked with me to produce the paper and those who contributed during the years.  I appreciate all the articles that were given to me to publish and the patience that all of you exhibited when there were errors.  Please give your support to the new editors and contribute your ideas so that the paper will continue to be interesting and informative.  May God Bless All of Us and continue to shower blessings on GVB for many more years to come.

Our thoughts and prayers go to Dorothy Wilson and family on the loss of Tom Wilson.  He will be missed.

SPRING IS HERE!

Camping season is officially underway.  Although we are off to a wet start, hopefully it will start drying out soon.

Opening day was such a wonderful day at Grand View Bend Campground this year.  It started out a little cool, but
warmed up nicely as the sun came out to join us.

We had so many New and Old members show up to help out.  It is always great to see everyone wanting to help and we got so much accomplished with everyone helping and working together and still having a good time.

THANKS SO MUCH TO EVERYONE WHO SHOWED UP AND HELPED OUT!  YOU ARE TERRIFIC!

The lunch that George Enboden put on for all of us working on opening day was greatly appreciated.  Also, special thanks to Daisy Christopher for preparing the delicious Sloppy Joes that we all enjoyed.

Thanks again, Everyone, and it is my hope that we can continue to work together throughout the season.

Tracy Miller, President

Dollars and Cents:

You know that GVBA gladly accepts checks and cash for your Association Dues, but did you know that if
you write a check and there are not sufficient funds to cover the check that the bank no longer returns the check to GVBA to resolve?  The funds are deducted from our account and the bank sends the check to a company called Fiserv and they collect the funds for GVBA.  Fiserv will not only collect the funds for the check but will also collect the maximum fees allowed by the State of Indiana.  Once the original funds are collected they are put back into GVBA’s account.

“If your check is returned unpaid, your account will be debited electronically for the original amount and electronically or via paper for the state’s maximum allowable service fee.  Payment by check constitutes authorization of these transactions.  You may revoke this authorization by calling (800) 666-5222, ext 2, to arrange payment for any
outstanding checks and service fees due.”

GVBA would like to THANK the lot owners who have paid their lot dues and those lot owners who have made  angements to pay for their lot dues.  If you have not paid or made arrangement, you must contact the Executive Treasurer immediately by phone at 260.499.1443 or at grandviewbend@gmail.com .

Tornado Safety Tips

This is the time of year to be very alert for tornados. Signs to watch for:

  • A sickly greenish or greenish black color to the sky.
  • If there is a watch or warning posted, then the fall of hail should be considered as a real danger sign.
  • A strange quite that occurs within or shortly after the thunderstorm.
  • Clouds moving by very fast, especially in a rotating pattern or converging toward one area of the sky.
  • A sound a little like a waterfall or rush air at first, but turning into a roar as it comes closer.
  • Debris dropping from the sky.
  • An obvious “tunnel-shaped” cloud that is rotating or debris such as branches or leaves being pulled upwards, even if no funnel cloud is visible.

If you see a tornado and it is not moving to the right or the left relative to trees or power poles in the distance, it may be moving towards you!  Remember that although tornados usually move from southwest to northeast, they also move other directions.

If you see any of the above, please go to a place of safety.  The bath houses are the safest places in the campground. Stay away from the south and west walls. Remember, you may not be able to outrun a tornado – do not get in your car and leave.

Dollars and Cents:

Do you remember the good old days when we had volunteers for everything in the campground?

Prior to 2001 everything in the campground was done by volunteers at no charge. Bob and Bill did the pool, Dolores and Duane weeded the fence row, we cleaned our own bathhouses, we had volunteers who mowed (most used their own mowers) and so many more people than I could possibly name.

What happened to those volunteers? They got tired. Who replaced them??????  Do you know what we spend much of our money on in the campground?

  • Bathhouse Cleaning 2x per week for the season $6,240.00 6 month contract
  • Reciprocal Camping Coordinator 7x per week for the season $4,500.00 for a 6 month contract
  • Pool Maintenance 7x per week for the season $4,880.00 for a 4 month contract
  • Mowing 1x per week for the season $6,350.00 for a 5 month contract
  • Honey Wagon $ 600.00 on request for 6 months

BUT before you complain about the $ they make and what GVBA spends.

ARE YOU willing to do it for free?

ARE YOU willing to use your own equipment and time to replace these items?

Reciprocal Camping and the Pool are sometimes here at 6 a.m. to get things ready or are staying till 11:00 pm because someone has called and is coming in. If you take the hours they work and divide what they make you might be surprised what they make per hour! I WOULD LOVE TO SEE US GO BACK TO ALL VOLUNTEERS but before we complain maybe we need to ask HOW CAN I HELP!  Most of us work full time in a very fast-paced, high stress environment and coming to the campground is our way to relax.  However, controlling our spending is important and we need every one’s help to meet our budget.

Membership Picnic

I can’t believe it is almost the end of July already, wow  summer is flying by. We have had a lot of storms come through the campground. Please  take a moment to look up at the trees around your lot and see if you have any  branches hanging that have snapped and broken. If the tree is on your lot, it  is your responsibility to take proper measures to have it taken care of, so that no damages occur to other fellow members of GVB or their property.

GVB Board of Directors are putting on a Picnic for the  membership July 30th at 5:30 p.m. with a bonfire and music provided by activities following the meal. Meat and drinks will be provided by the directors. Also Thanks so Much to the many members who will be providing various salads for this meal. We have had an outstanding turn out of volunteers
for this event, and it sounds like it will truly be a good time. For all other members who plan to attend, please bring a desert.

If you have ever thought about running for the board, now is your time; nomination forms will be taken until the second week in August. Please see Cindy Perry lot 200 across from the main bath house for forms. Also the Annual membership meeting is coming in September and we would love to see everyone there.  Your voice will be heard.  Have a great summer and see you at the picnic!

One Of Our Own!

Thanks to all of our members for their great support of our July 4th weekend breakfast.  Thanks to all the members who volunteered their time to clean the tables, set up the condiments, cook and serve the food and do the dishes. Also, thanks to those members that came to eat.  There was good food, good fun and we took in $443 from the breakfast.  Thanks to those who donated to the 50/50; we took in around $37 for the campground.  We will have another breakfast on Labor Day weekend.  If you would like to assist, please see George Tyler.  Again, we appreciate your great support.

George Tyler, Breakfast Coordinator

Dollars and Sense:

Why does GVBA have golf cart permits?

GVBA wants to make sure all golf carts driven on GVBA property have an insurance waiver on file. It is the golf cart owner’s responsibility to have insurance.  GVBA also needs to have a way to identify the cart should something happen that the owner needs to be made aware of (like this spring, I got a call that a golf cart was stolen, I was able to call the
owner and reassure him all was well). The $15.00 for 3 years goes into the road repair fund.  GVBA Board has not been enforcing the sticker rule.  Starting this year permits expiration dates will run from season to season.  In January we will be sending letters along with the dues notice to renew your permits. If you need a new permit, come to lot 291 on the weekend and see Kathy.

Kathy Brown, Executive Treasurer, Grand View Bend

ELECTION NEWS:

Nomination forms for the election are available .  Please see the secretary on lot 200 for a form. These are due back in no later than August 13th.  We will have profiles on all the candidates posted on the bulletin board.

A note to the Membership:

Please note that the Board decided to change the annual membership meeting to the second Saturday in September with the elections of board members to be held at that time.  As this is later in the season, if you have any questions or concerns or will not be able to attend this meeting, please send your questions or concerns to the Executive Secretary, Cindy Perry, at Grand view Bend, PO Box 185, How, IN 46746.  You are GVB and your vote is very important, so please return your completed ballot when you receive it.  The ballots will be sent out the third weekend in August.  Please remember, this is your campground and it is your responsibility to take an active part in selecting your representatives.

Thank you – Mary Ellen Coyne

Thoughts from Eva Miller

Oh, what a Spring it was.  So much going on, lot of cleaning up, fixing roads, cutting trees, cooking outdoors, fishing, going out in boats and more. On June 18th, early Saturday morning, some were out fixing our roads.  That was great to see.  Then I could smell someone fixing breakfast on a open fire – cooking bacon, frying potatoes, ham, grits and coffee.  Boy what a breakfast it was.  It is great to see families having a great time.  Then it was time to celebrate Brooke’s graduation.  After that, home made Ice Cream with Strawberries.  After that, we all enjoyed watching the tree men cut down a tree that was much needed.  And to tope the day off, we all enjoyed a wonderful, relaxing evening by a bon fire put on by Activities.  We had hot dongs, lots of wonderful food and lovely music of the 40s and 50s.  This brought back good memories.  There was dancing and some played games.

Then on June 25th, a very cool Saturday morning, there were lots of workers out doing the roads again, filling the pot holes, putting down calcium chloride and watering it in and cleaning up around the pond. Thanks to all for their wonderful hard work.  Some people were helping others on their own yards.  It was wonderful to see the members all helping out and working together. The campground looked great for the big weekend – July 4th!  Thanks to all at Grand View Bend.

WHAT A WONDERFUL SEASON

Here we are facing yet another  closing season at GVB. Oh how bittersweet. It just seems like yesterday we were
turning the water on, and planning events for the summer.  It was great to see so many of our members  getting involved this year to help out with the many events that we had going  on and it is with my hope that this kind of support and togetherness  continues.  Thanks so much to George  Enboden for the many activities that were planned throughout the year and  special thanks to Peggy Enboden and Phyllis Holms for your assistance and  support. Thanks to Jim Davenport for heading up the maintenance and all the  people who helped out with maintenance related issues this year. You all are
greatly appreciated in so many ways.  As  many of the people in the park know it is never an easy job taking on the role
of the Activities Director or Maintenance Chairperson. It is a volunteer  position, and many times the person who is volunteering to take on this role  also works a 40 plus hour job during the week. Although there have been a lot
of people who have stepped up this year and helped out in so many ways, I think  it should be brought up that before you cast your complaint in either direction  concerning our volunteers, please just take a moment and ask yourself, how can
I help out instead?

Closing for the park  is October 8th, if you are willing to help out please meet us at the  maintenance barn at 9:00 a.m.  There is a  list of activities that need to be done for the closing.

During the winter months the  Executive Committee is planning on getting together and going over the job bid  forms as we feel there are some clarifications that need to be made to them. We  need to make sure that whatever is decided on is in the best interest of GVB  when bids are accepted.

I hope that everyone has a safe  and healthy winter and can’t wait to see everyone again in the spring. Again  thanks so much to EVERYONE for yet another great year at GVB. If it wasn’t for  our members, our park wouldn’t be the wonderful place it is today.

God Bless

Tracy Miller

What does it cost GVBA when we collect association fees through an attorney?

Here is an example……….In 2009 we gave the attorney information that an owner had unpaid dues (175.00) and the approval to take the owner to  court and collect. Thus began many filings and e-mail between the owner, the  attorney, GVBA and the court. Here are the attorney fees for 2009, 2010 and  2011. $2,838.68 and  then you have $525.00 in
unpaid dues. In Aug 2011 the lot finally went up for auction the first bid was  $100.00. The lot finally sold for $3,000.00. You do the math……who won?

Your Board Of Directors

In September, the membership voted to reduce the number of Board Members to 9.  At a special meeting of the Board to approve the ballot, there was much discussion about how many board members to accept in  2011 if we did indeed go to a 9 member board. We discussed that if we voted only 2 members on this year, next year (2012) we would have to vote for 3
members and have 2 more appointed for one year (5 people leaving plus 1 to replace the person from 2013 and 1 to add someone from 2014).  The following year, we would vote for 3 and  have to appoint 1 again for a year.   However, if we vote for 3 and have a 10 person board this year, nex year, we would vote for 3 and still have to appoint 1 but then we would have a  9 member board from here forward.  The Board agreed that this would be the better plan as there would be more  continuity to the board and be better for Grand View Bend Association.
